Can I put a double bed in a flat furnished with a single bed?

My friend is renting a two bedroom flat and both bedrooms are furnished with single beds but are large enough to fit doubles. She wants to put a double bed in but has been told she can't as apparently "it would suggest more than two people would be living there." Is that right? If she is renting a "two bed" flat then having a double bed, regardless of whether one or two people are sleeping in it, shouldn't be against the rules.

3. unless it specifically says you can't in the lease, you can.
4. Of course she can put a double bed in there. The landlord CANNOT tell you what you can or cannot sleep in. Thats rediculous. Just as long as she puts it back when she leaves then its not an issue.
5. sounds to me like your renting from a complete idiot or con artist. Just out of curiosity, is there something about it in the contract? If not, you can do what you please in my opinion anyway.
