Is a cal king bed supposed to hang off a metal bed frame a little?

I just bought a cal king bed and got a metal frame for free, but I noticed that the frame is about a foot short in lenght and the bed hangs over it a little. Is this normal and why? Thanks in advanced.

1. My normal bed does that and its a full size mattress. I think to fit anynsize mattress that is the same width. I guess certain brands have lengths that are ever so slightly different. That's my view. Hope that helped.
